What is the difference between translation and localization?

For those who reside in the US and who primarily encounter US- and American English-based materials (websites, stores, news, signs, etc.), you might never have experienced the effect of a brand or company not being localized. For those who have experienced this, they describe it on a smaller scale like being left out of an inside joke. Or, on a larger scale, it’s like being lost in a foreign country and not knowing how to navigate or even how to ask for help.

  • Translation:
Converts the written words from one language to another.
  • Localization:
Adapts the meaning of those words and matches the context culturally for the new language.

For instance, idioms or phrases that are topical can be problematic to simply translate, like “I’ll take a rain check” should be localized and explained to mean “I’d like to do [something] at a later time.”

True localization considers the symbolic meanings of visuals, icons, or colors, or currencies, layout and design, legal requirements, text length, right-to-left writing, and other considerations so that the material becomes completely authentic to the local viewer.

When your organization’s materials are localized, you provide the same experience to all people no matter what language they speak. This can be critical not only for understanding, but also for the bottom line of for-profit companies.
